  • BAM certification: seals & engineering plastics for critical applications
  • BAM approval is an important quality feature in the world of technical seals and plastic construction parts. BAM stands for “Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung“, which is the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, a renowned German authority responsible for safety in technology and chemistry. A BAM authorization is required when materials, sealing materials or components are used in safety-critical areas. This applies in particular to environments with pure oxygen or other reactive substances. BAM-approved seals are of particular importance here. BAM confirms that the material meets the strict safety requirements for use in high-pressure systems and for handling hazardous substances.

It makes sure that the material can withstand oxygen applications when manufactured as a seal. This BAM certificate or BAM test is often decisive for selection in critical industrial applications.

In addition to BAM-approved seals, plastic construction parts such as valve seats are also used in substance-carrying systems. We manufacture these in the form of complex plastic components made of PTFE, for example. If a seal is oxygen-sealing or safety-relevant, a BAM certificate is essential.

Market changes due to the regulation of PFAS and the Dyneon closure

3M Dyneon, a leading manufacturer of PTFE products, has recently made the decision to close one of its subsidiaries, Dyneon GmbH. The Dyneon closure affects, among others, the plant in Gendorf, Germany. The main reason for the Dyneon closure is the planned regulation of PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances).

Production is to be discontinued by the end of 2025. The Dyneon plants in Belgium and Germany could be affected by the closure.

This decision will have extensive consequences for the industry, especially for companies that previously relied on 3M Dyneon products. Popular products such as unreinforced 3M Dyneon TFM 1600 PTFE and 3M Dyneon TFM 4105 PTFE 25% glass fiber are likely to be affected by this closure. These materials are known for their excellent properties and BAM certification. The seals made from these materials help to reliably seal oxygen applications.

You can read detailed information on PFAS in our technical report.

BAM approval for seals – why the certification is important

Hänssler works with various manufacturers who also offer PTFE types with BAM approval. These alternatives can meet the needs of the industry and ensure a continuous supply. There is also the possibility of having PTFE compounds tested in order to obtain a BAM certificate. This is an option for companies that have very specific requirements.

BAM approved gaskets can be found in many demanding areas. For example, a suitable gasket can master oxygen applications as well as the challenges of medical technology, the high-pressure chemical and petrochemical sector, the gas industry, aerospace and the food and pharmaceutical industries.

BAM certification is a decisive quality feature for construction and sealing materials. Despite the challenges posed by the planned closure of 3M Dyneon in Germany and Belgium, there are alternatives on the market. As plastics professionals, we are well positioned with a wide network to support you in the selection of suitable, certified sealing materials.

Obtain seals and milled parts of the highest standards with BAM approval

As a specialist in the production of highly complex seals and milled parts, we also regularly manufacture components from materials with BAM approval. We offer you the opportunity to have your individual plastic parts milled to meet the strictest safety requirements.

Valve seats for ball valves are a prime example of this expertise. These precisely manufactured components play a critical role in systems that work with pure oxygen or other reactive substances. By machining in state-of-the-art machinery, we at Hänssler achieve the necessary precision and surface quality that are essential for such demanding applications.

In addition, Hänssler manufactures a large number of other complex geometries made from plastics with BAM approval. The combination of state-of-the-art milling technology, comprehensive material expertise and many years of experience with BAM-approved materials makes us the reliable partner you need for your critical applications.
